Stretch marks or striae (singular stria), as they are called in dermatology, are a form of scarring on the skin with an off-color hue. They are generated by tearing of the dermis, and over time might diminish but not disappear completely.Stretch marks firstly show up as reddish or purple lines, but tend to gradually lose color to a lighter range. The affected areas show up empty and are soft to the touch. They might show up anywhere on the body, but are most likely to show up in places where larger amounts of fat are stored. Most popular places are the abdomen, upper arms, underarms, back, thighs, hips and buttocks.
