Probiotics have a reasonably brief history as far as health supplements are concerned. The word "probiotic" was first coined by Werner Kollath in 1953, although the idea of microorganisms playing a favorable function in intestinal tract health was initially observed by Russian scientist and Nobel laureate Elie Metchnikoff in the early part of 20th century.
