The ASR XL Acetabular System and the ASR Hip Resurfacing System were recalled in August 2010 by their manufacturer, DePuy Orhtopaedics. The orthopedic devices were sold in countries such as the United States, Australia, Ireland, the United Kingdom and Canada, among others. These hip replacements were found to fail within 5 years of implantation and about 12 to 13 percent would need a risky and expensive hip revision surgery to correct the damage. Some of the complications experienced by victims of the DePuy hip replacement recall failure are pain, stiffness in the hip area, difficulty walking, and metallosis, or what is called metal poisoning.
