Many people have sight issues and there are a number of ways of dealing with them, but you should find out from a qualified optician as to what the best solution is for you.
The most regularly diagnosed issues, certainly in the first few decades of your life, are usually short-sightedness (myopia) or long-sightedness (hyperopia). As the English name indicates, short-sightedness is when you can see clearly objects which are near to you, but have trouble focusing on objects in the distance. Long-sightedness obviously means exactly the opposite.
In both of these complaints, the problem lies with the cornea (the front of the eye) which is not precisely the right shape to give perfect vision. In myopia the cornea is a bit too steep, in hyperopia the opposite applies. If the problem is mild, then the lack of good vision can be a minor annoyance, but if it is very bad it can be very restrictive for the sufferer.
For a long time, the best solution has been corrective glasses which make up for the visual shortcomings of the eyes. But in recent years, Laser eye surgery has also become a favoured choice of treatment, albeit a more expensive one.
Laser eye treatment is a tried and trusted remedy for the problem. It is quick and straightforward for an eye specialist to accomplish, causes only minor pain and has a quick recovery time. Subject to the surgeon’s approval, Laser eye surgery can be carried out on both eyes at the same consultation, although some people prefer to have them operated on individually.
During the procedure, a laser is used to alter the shape of the cornea, making it a little flatter if the diagnosis is myopia and a little steeper if long-sightedness is the problem. In both cases, the nature of Laser eye treatment is simply to vaporise cells to change the shape of the cornea, so no actual surgical instruments are required to physically make contact with the eye. This is the biggest reason why recovery times are short for treatment carried out like this.
Clearly, Laser eye treatment is not the perfect solution for all those with eye complaints. There might be other medical reasons why it is not the right thing for all sufferers. And it should be borne in mind that it isn’t guaranteed to restore perfect vision, but will improve sight to the extent that reliance on glasses can be much decreased in the future.
