DePuy’s Recalled Hip Implants and the FDA

A lot of patients who used the hip implants that were manufactured by DePuy Orthopaedics were required to undergo a second surgery. This happened after a few years of using the hip implant despite its guaranty to last for fifteen years. A DePuy hip implant recall happened because this has affected around 93, 000 individuals. Although the recall came in quite late, it happened voluntarily.
As a subsidiary of DePuy Orthopaedics, Johnson & Johnson has released a statement for this situation. Most of what Johnson & Johnson said was that affected patients need not worry too much because their condition can all be treated by a revision surgery. Actually, there are more dangers in this incident than what Johnson & Johnson is trying to convey to the affected users. People are failed to inform about the dangers of metallosis. When the metals used in the hip replacement implant gets in the person’s blood, metallosis happen. In the case of perfectly designed hip implants, the releasing of metals in the blood can happen but it is much more larger for faulty implants. This is carcinogenic and can have long term effects.
As we all know, the government has a role in how a certain product can be available in the market. The responsibility to check the product before giving it an approval that it is okay for the public to buy is tasked on the Food and Drug Administration. After a series of tests is done to check for the quality of the product, an approval will be given. If the trial assures that there are no dangers when an individual uses the product, it can easily get through the market.
Allegations that accuses DePuy of already knowing that their implants were defective are making people angrier. These products have actually passed through the hands of the FDA. Still, the trials were not enough because it only catered to one tenth of the products because it was deemed to be of the same quality on the earlier products that DePuy manufactured. It is still debatable if the FDA knows about the state of DePuy’s hip recalled implants.
