Class 1 is recommended for use by delivery vehicle drivers, parking service attendants, and shopping cart retrievers. Employees in warehousing facilities use this class when working with equipment traffic.

Class 2 garments are used where the speed limit exceeds 25MPH, and there is a more complex background of objects and activities. In these situations the worker may be required to focus on other tasks, including traffic. There should be at least a minimum of 201 square inches of reflective tape, or 8.375 linear feet of 2-inch tape or 12.2 linear feet of 1 3/8-inch tape.

Class 2 garments are recommended for wear is such situations as employees who are investigating an accident site, but in less hazardous conditions, and for airport baggage handling and ground crews. Law enforcement personnel, EMT, and forestry workers are also required to wear this classification of clothing, and less hazardous situations like school crossing guards, railway attendants, and survey crews and utility workers.

Class 3 standards offer the highest level of visibility for workers who are more completely involved in doing their jobs, instead of watching traffic that exceeds 50MPH, and under any weather conditions. These are the situations where the worker needs to be a obvious as possible. The reflection standards for this class are a minimum of 155 square inches of reflective tape, or 6.46 linear feet of 2-inch tape or 9.39 linear feet of 1 3/8-inch tape.

Recommended situations for wearing Class 3 clothing include EMT responders, accident investigators, survey crews and flagging crews. Utility and railway workers, and construction crews, must wear this class of clothing, including those who may be operating vehicles, or other equipment on the job site. Class 3 is for workers who are expected to concentrate on their tasks, instead of traffic.
