Safety issues are not ignored when a swimming pool is opened to the public. but sometimes even the most thorough planning will not be enough to prevent and accident.

Trained lifeguards are typically on duty and their certifications are available for viewing, but their experience level may be in question. No one will ever doubt their knowledge or ability to help in stopping a potential drowning but their ability to deal with a range of public swimming pool emergencies may be in question.

As well as making sure that swimmers are not put in danger in the water, the people running the pool need to ensure the surrounding area is safe. Most people will have bare feet and if there are loose tiles, sharp edges or uneven surfaces you could be at the end of an accident claim.

Pool users can present a danger to their fellow swimmers if they do not take enough care. People can be jumped on and bumped into when others are too rough in the water. They may also introduce foreign objects into the water that can cause harm to others in the public swimming pool.

Diseases can also be transferred through the water although chemicals are used in most public pools.

Despite the opportunity for danger at a public swimming pool, they are still a great place for friends who do not have their own swimming pool to meet during the hot summer months to gather and enjoy the relaxation of water sports.

Keeping in mind the safety of your group as well as the safety of other around you can enhance the overall all fun experience of everyone using the public swimming pool. Children need to be supervised by their guardians so as not to act inappropriately at the pool or interfere with their fellow swimmers.

Both those who swim at the pool and those who run it need to take responsibility for their safety and that of others around them.
