Making Your Office Feel Like Home

You spend long hours at your office, making an income to pay the bills. While it’s not always enjoyable to go to work, it’s nice to have an office where you can feel at home. Of course, you can’t relax there, like you do at home, but there are some simple things that you can do at the office to help it feel homier and less like a cold, unfriendly room. You can make some changes to make your office a place that you enjoy going to, because it has been personalized to your needs, wants and personality.

One thing that you can do is pay close attention to the décor. This doesn’t necessarily mean changing the color of everything or buying all new furniture. However, it does mean assessing what you already have and considering whether or not things need changed. The color of your room can make a huge difference. One person may find a room’s decor invigorating while another finds it cold and unfriendly. Sometimes, simply adding a border or lighting in a room can make a huge difference in how things look.

You need to ask yourself how comfortable you feel in the office. By asking yourself some simple questions, you can accomplish this. Is your chair comfortable or do you feel achy and sore after sitting for awhile? Is your keyboard easy to use or do you find yourself straining to reach it and then feeling sore later? Can you see your computer screen easily or are you bending your neck and shoulders to see it comfortably and then suffering from a sore back, neck, and shoulders?

If you find that you really are experiencing some pain, it may be worthwhile to invest in some ergonomic products. These items are made to provide the healthiest position for your body so you can keep going and not make your body feel stressed or strained. If you are always reaching or stretching, your muscles are going to get tired. The whole body will feel fatigued with pinched nerves and needed blood supply blocked.

For example, you will find yourself facing various health problems if your desk is too high or too low. Your legs need adequate room to stretch beneath your desk. The desk needs to be at a height where you can easily type and write without feeling stress on your body. Also, your computer screen should be at a comfortable height, directly in front of your eyes so you are not bending your neck while you look at the screen. An adjustable desk will make it possible for you to change your position so you can avoid many of these health problems and feel comfortable while working.

The arrangement of items in your office can make a big difference for you. Oftentimes just by moving some items around, you will feel better about your area. Stopping to consider where you spend most of your time and how often you actually move around can help you realize what might need to change. In order to be comfortable, invest in a fan or heater if your office is too hot or too cold. You are straining your eyes if you don’t have enough light.

No matter how you look at it, this is your space and your office. You need to do what you can to personalize it and make it comfortable for you to get work done. When you realize that things can change for the better, you can begin to make those changes with confidence. Even if you only have a small space, set off with dividers, it’s your space. Make it your home away from home so you can be healthier, more comfortable and more productive.
