Probiotics have a reasonably brief history as far as health supplements are concerned. The word "probiotic" was first coined by Werner Kollath in 1953, although the idea of microorganisms playing a favorable function in intestinal tract health was initially observed by Russian scientist and Nobel laureate Elie Metchnikoff in the early part of 20th century. Metchnikoff suggested that ageing was the result of microbes producing toxic substances in the large bowel, and that introducing lactic-acid bacteria would lower the Ph level in the intestine and thus suppress the development of the harmful microorganisms.
