Once a child turns 3 and until the age 19 it has been suggested that an eye examination is scheduled every 2 years. For adults age 20 to 29 with no existing issues, one vision screening during this period of time may be appropriate. By the ages of 30 to 39, only two exams during this period are advised. Past age 40, an vision screening every two to four years is advised, and for those age 65, exams every one or two years are advised.

Having a routine vision screening is critical to the health of your eyes. Not everybody knows that your eyes can change over time, sometimes in short periods. You don’t really want to order a costly pair of glasses or contact lenses and then realize they are not working properly. By getting an an eye examination on a regular schedule you can prevent this from happening.

Of course, these are basic principals. There are many personal variations, and some people will need vision screenings more regularly. Your own eye doctor is your best source of information on how often to have vision screenings. Individuals with diabetes or a family history of vision issues should be examined more regularly, as should African Americans older than 40 due to higher rates of high blood pressure in this demographic. Of course, with any rapid changes in vision must get an eye screening quickly regardless of age, gender, or race.
