Things You Need To Know About Renal Artery Stenosis

Renal artery stenosis is a condition in which your blood supply to your kidney is blocked. If you have this, your kidney will eventually become starved of oxygen and will eventually stop working.
It causes between 5-22% of cases of advanced kidney disease in US patients over the age of 50. It may also be a factor in between 1-10% of adults with high blood pressure.
The two major problems of renal artery stenosis is that you can develop bad hypertension, which is really difficult to control. Renal failure is the other major complication.
However, renal artery stenosis is usually due to a problem that affects all of the blood vessels. So, if you have renal artery stenosis, the chances are that you will have interrupted blood flow to other organs too – the obvious ones to worry about are the brain and heart.
You may not have any warning symptoms and the way that it is likely to be picked up early is by having routine blood pressure monitoring and a low threshold for renal function blood tests if you are feeling tired and unwell for an unusually long period of time.
There are medical and surgical treatments available and the one most appropriate for your case will depend on a variety of circumstances. It is best to go to your local renal service, in order to get the best advice possible for further management.
